We will give you some examples on how to write better stories in this post that could inspire you to go back to your manuscript. Enjoy!

Tips for Novels

The majority of writers go for the good old-fashioned novel, so we’ll start by giving you some tips on writing novels.

  • Fiction:
  • First and foremost, be aware of your content. This means that you should always know how your fictional world operates, what your characters’ motivations are, and what the story logic is. You can explore different paths, you don’t have to write the ending you originally planned, but it has to make sense in regards to the characters’ arcs and the plot development.

  • Non-fiction:
  • The best advice for authors writing non-fictional novels is to know your subject/s well. However, make sure that you don’t “fall in love” with the subject; what this means is that you should remain objective throughout and explore multiple perspectives. If you fail to do that, you risk entering the realm of historical fiction.

Tips for Short Stories

Short stories might seem easy to write because they can be as short as a single paragraph and as long as 20 pages, but we advise you to be cautious when you undertake that task. We recommend focusing on telling a very captivating event or having a very interesting character.

Each short story, no matter how many pages it is, should be self-contained even if you’re planning on writing a part two. It’s important to write in a concise manner and exclude the fluff. The reader should be hooked from the very start, so think carefully about the first few words you wish to share with them.

Tips for Poetry

Poetry is a much more experimental genre in comparison to prose, but that doesn’t mean that anything goes. Think of your poem as a window to your soul, but decorate the window in a way to guide the reader into it. You can do that by consciously thinking about the literary devices you use.

Open a dictionary of literary devices and read a few definitions. Any time you use alliteration or a metaphor, the reader’s interpretation would be subconsciously affected. Still, don’t write poems using a checklist of devices you want to use, let it happen as naturally as possible, while remaining in control of your poetic narrative.
